Dear Bulldog Families,
Like many school districts across Oklahoma, Altus Public Schools will make a small adjustment to the school day beginning with the 2026-2027 school year to comply with a new state law.
Senate Bill 1481 requires all Kindergarten through 5th grade students to receive at least 40 minutes of supervised, unstructured recess each day, which doubles the previous requirement. The law also specifies that 20 of those 40 minutes cannot count as instructional time.
To meet these new requirements while preserving valuable classroom instruction, the Altus Public Schools Board of Education has approved adding 10 minutes to the school day.
Beginning this school year, all Altus Public Schools campuses will follow the same schedule:
School Begins: 7:55 a.m.
School Dismisses: 3:05 p.m.
Morning bus routes are expected to remain on their current schedule. Afternoon bus routes will begin approximately five minutes later than in previous years.
While this is a small adjustment, it allows us to comply with state law while continuing to provide our students with the high-quality instruction they deserve each day.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support of our students, staff, and the entire Bulldog community. We look forward to another outstanding school year.
Sincerely,
Roe Worbes
Superintendent
